Curriculum vitae

After obtaining a Master’s degree in chemistry (1984), I worked as a teacher of chemistry in a secondary school. In the same period, I started to work on a PhD thesis at Utrecht University, which focused on the teaching and learning of chemical equilibrium. After this was finished (in 1990), I moved to the educational development department of Delft University of Technology

as a teacher trainer and educational consultant. Since 1995 I have worked at ICLON – Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching; in 2006 I became a full professor of science education. At ICLON, my research has focused on the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and beliefs of teachers in the context of initial teacher training and educational innovations. I have been, and am, a member of the editorial board of several national and international journals, including Journal of Research in Science Teaching, International Journal of Science Education, and Pedagogische Studiën. I was co-editor of the book Chemical Education: Towards research-based practice (Kluwer, 2002). Since 2006 I am the vice-president of the Netherlands Educational Research Association (VOR).

Cognition and epistemology of mathematics and their implications to mathematics curricula and teacher education; focus on advanced mathematical thinking, particularly the concept of proof, the learning and teaching of linear algebra, and the development of the multiplicative conceptual field.

 Prof.Dr.Kenneth HELER

Research Areas
My research in high energy particle physics focuses on the properties of neutrino oscillations. My research in physics education is in developing ways to coach students to become better problem solvers and to develop techniques to assess problem solving. PER combines the application of fundamental knowledge about learning and the discipline specific knowledge of physics to investigate ways of making the teaching and learning of physics more effective and efficient, primarily at the university level. It is an interdisciplinary area with strong roots in the two core disciplines of Physics and Education
